AI Isn’t the Threat MSPs Think It Is
Why the Price of MSP Work Is About to Change
We’re asking the wrong questions about AI.
“Will it replace technicians?”
“Will it replace help desk?”
“Will it replace MSPs?”
That’s not how this shift will play out.
AI doesn’t remove work first.
It changes the price of work.
And when the price of work changes, the economics of the model change with it.
I used to think AI would be a headcount story.
Fewer technicians.
Smaller teams.
That may happen.
But it’s not the main thing.
The main thing is that certain kinds of work are about to get cheaper.
Much cheaper.
And when the price of work changes, the model changes with it.
Cheap Work Gets Cheaper
The first work to feel pressure is predictable labor.
Repetitive work.
Pattern-based work.
Work that relies on intervention.
Things like:
• first-line triage
• standard troubleshooting
• drafting responses
• summarizing issues
• routine remediation steps
This work doesn’t disappear overnight.
But it becomes harder to justify at yesterday’s price.
Not because clients become experts.
But because assistance becomes ubiquitous.
Execution gets cheaper.
And cheap execution changes expectations.
Judgment Gets More Valuable
At the same time, the value moves.
The work that becomes more valuable is not execution.
It’s direction.
• deciding what matters
• designing the environment
• defining guardrails
• recognizing patterns across clients
• owning outcomes
AI lowers the cost of execution.
But it raises the value of judgment.
That’s the shift.
Execution gets cheaper.
Judgment gets more valuable.
The Offer Gets Exposed
This is where it becomes uncomfortable.
AI reveals what you’re actually selling.
If your offer is built around:
• responsiveness
• technician time
• intervention
• “we do the work for you”
Pricing pressure will move directly into your core service.
Not because the work disappears.
Because the work becomes easier to assist.
But if your offer is built around:
• architecture
• outcomes
• standards
• business alignment
• designed environments
AI can actually strengthen your business.
Because execution becomes cheaper.
While judgment becomes more valuable.
The Model Breaks First
This is why the real impact of AI won’t show up in tools.
It will show up in pricing.
If your business model depends on human effort for repeatable work, pressure is coming.
Not all at once.
But little by little.
As execution gets easier.
As assistance becomes widely available.
As clients start asking different questions.
AI doesn’t replace MSPs.
It reprices them.
The MSPs who understand what they actually sell will benefit from the shift.
