Design the MSP You’re Excited to Run
Most MSP owners never do this—and it’s why they stay stuck.
Do you ever feel like you're working hard but not getting anywhere?
That’s usually a sign you’re operating without a clear understanding of how your business actually works.
When you don’t know what’s working—and what’s not—it’s easy to waste time, money, and energy in the wrong places.
Most MSPs skip this step.
They dive into new tools, new services, and new clients without first understanding the business they’re already running.
If you want to build a better MSP, you have to start by taking inventory.
Here are three areas to focus on:
1. Start with a Client Audit
Some clients move your business forward.
Others drag it down.
Think about the clients you serve today.
Which ones feel like a win every time you engage with them—and which ones make you hesitate when their name pops up?
Are they on retainer?
Hourly?
Always late with payments?
Consider how much support they require and whether the relationship feels like a drain or a partnership.
A better business starts with serving better clients.
2. Move to a Service Stack Audit
A bloated stack creates friction you don’t need.
Take a step back and look at everything you’re offering.
Are you using five tools that do the job of two?
Are there legacy services you’re still offering just because they’re easy or familiar.
Every tool adds complexity—onboarding, support, billing.
Simplifying your stack makes your whole business run smoother.
The simpler your services, the easier they are to sell, support, and scale.
3. Finish with a Personal Audit
You’re not just building a business—you’re building a life.
What role do you want to play in the company?
Do you want to grow a team or stay solo?
Be the tech or the visionary?
Look at how you spend your time.
If your calendar doesn’t reflect your goals, you’re working off someone else’s plan.
If you don’t design your role, your business will do it for you.
You can’t grow a business you haven’t taken the time to understand.
The MSP owners who win aren’t the busiest or the brightest—they’re the ones who slow down, take inventory, and build with intention.
So pause and look at what you’ve built.
Does it serve you—or are you still serving it?
Most MSPs sell planning and process to clients… then wing it in their own business.
It’s a strange paradox—and one that keeps them stuck.
You don’t have to keep guessing.
You just have to be willing to look.
